How is Coaching Conducted?

Coaches and clients arrange a schedule that works well for them both. Coaches have different approaches to sessions depending on their preferred ways of working and the client’s issue.

The client brings an issue or range of issues to the session; the coach listens and forms suitable questions to further clarify the issue on behalf of the client. The coach then asks powerful and at times provocative questions; through their answers, the client explores their current experience and future options. The coach often reframes an issue in terms of the timescale and perspective to enable the client see situations in a new light and enable more creative solutions to arise. The range of possible options will be generated and an action plan agreed.

Key Aspects of Coaching

Confidentiality

The aspect of confidentiality is clearly an aspect of coaching which is held in high regard by the coach. This is essential to enable coachee to trust and feel sufficiently at ease to reveal their beliefs, values, aspirations, current challenges and opportunities.

Equality of Relationships

Coaching is an equal relationship embodying equal commitment of coach and client. Individual responsibility is necessary – the coach being responsible for them self and the client being responsible for them self and their decisions.

Mutual Commitment

Commitment to the coaching process and established goal must come from both coach and client for coaching to have profound effects in the client’s life.

The Client Takes Action

It is the task of the coach to help the client recognize their ability to choose and act by assuming that this is possible. However, it is crucial for the client’s growth to understand that the full and final responsibility for all their decisions and actions rests with the client them self.

Focus

The coach assists the client in focusing squarely in the direction in which the client wants to go; thus enabling them to get there quicker, with less energy-sapping detours along the way.

Accountability

The client is accountable for carrying out the agreed actions is required to feed back their progress between sessions. This grants the coaching process highly effective power and leads to real measurable results.
