3 Easy Steps to Build Rapport with NLP
July 12, 2018

1 . NLP Presuppositions

– If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten. Therefore, any positive change requires new thinking, new perceptions and new beliefs about yourself and your environment.

The truth is, “positive thinking” is not enough, because it’s your ability to ‘Think On Purpose’ that will enable you to get what you want. The only question is “HOW?” – “How do I use my brain for a positive change?”

One of the very first things you learn in Authentic NLP are the 20 Presuppositions – a set of life principles and beliefs that teach you HOW to think on purpose. Once you internalise them and start acting accordingly, you will discover that ‘You have all the resources you need to be successful at anything you do’. Here are some examples:

1. ‘Map is not the territory’

2. ‘People have all the Resources they need to be Successful’

3. ‘Resistance is a sign of a lack of Rapport’

4. ‘Mind and Body are One’

5. ‘When I Believe it, I can Achieve it’

2. Anchoring

– We all experience a range of different emotions as we go through each day. You may have noticed that some things make you happy, e.g. the smile of your loved one; and other things annoy or stress you out, e.g. the voice of your boss. In fact, our brain is full of ‘invisible buttons’ that trigger different emotions and responses. The question is, What are your buttons and Who is in charge of pushing them?

Anchoring is a fundamental technique in NLP, that teaches you HOW to use your five senses (see, hear, feel, smell or taste) to trigger a certain emotional state and condition yourself for more useful responses. Once you have learnt Anchoring you will feel empowered because you will have an effective way to manage your emotions, and reprogram your behaviour so that you are no longer at the mercy of those who ‘push your buttons’.

3. Sub-Modalities

– Is Wanting to change enough to change?

– Maybe; but the power of your old habit will slow you down. How many times have you wanted to try ‘quit old’ and ‘start new’?

You may have given up, but there is still good new for you.

The truth is, any of your experiences are represented through your 5 senses. And your Sub-conscious Mind uses these 5 senses as a ‘coding language’ to program all your habits of thinking, feeling and behaving. Sub-Modalities are the your internal representations of your experiences. It is another fundamental concept in Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ that teaches you to alter your perception of any experience in your life. For example, you can learn to adjust your Sub-Modalities and program your brain to switch from Anxiety of a future event to Anticipation of the same event. When you master Sub-Modalities in combination with Anchoring, you will have truly mind-blowing results.

4. Meta-Model

– The Language that we use to express ourselves reveals a lot about how we perceive our reality, what our beliefs and values are and also which limitations we impose on ourselves even without noticing it. Listening skill is an acquired skill. The question is: How well are you equipped to ‘read between the lines’ and to hear the true meaning behind someone’s words?

Meta-Model is a skill that will enable you to become very precise in your communication; it teaches you to recognise how others generalize, delete and distort their reality to make sense of it. You will also learn a set of specific questions to get to the core of each statement and find out the exact information you are looking for.

5. Milton-Model

You cannot change other people, but you certainly can influence them.

The foundation to any meaningful communication is Rapport. Your ability to connect with people will determine how well they will follow you. Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ offers numerous skills and techniques to build rapport with others – you can do it by matching and mirroring their physiology, speech quality, anchoring and of course through language.

Milton-Model is teaches you a fascinating set of hypnotic language patterns, that use vague and ambiguous language to build rapport with others and communicate your message on the sub-conscious level. You can imbed the Milton-Model patterns in your speeches, presentations or even any regular conversations where you aim to persuade and influence others and overcome resistance and objections.
